Citibank is the world’s second largest funder of global climate catastrophe. When we fight for a fossil free world we act in solidarity with people most impacted by fossil fuel driven climate change.
Ending the reign of fossil fuel consumption and transitioning to renewable energy sources saves lives and trillions of dollars—the costs of resource extraction, air pollution, and damages from climate disasters.
Since 2016, Citi has pumped over $332 billion into fossil fuels, driving the exploitation and pollution of communities around the world.
The hearing examined how the bank’s funding of oil, coal, and gas directly harms Black, Indigenous, and Global South communities. It culminated in demands for Citigroup to immediately stop funding fossil fuels, publicly acknowledge harm the bank has caused communities of color, respect Indigenous rights, and invest in a just transition to sustainable energy.
Investor nuns are warning Citi shareholders that the bank does not meet the demands of their resolution on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights.
A new Citi report puts the bank under pressure to drop clients focused on oil, gas, and coal due to 71% of these companies not having sufficient climate plans
Citi is the world’s second largest fossil fuel financier and one of the worst enablers of the global climate crisis.
Scientists have issued a stark warning: fossil fuels are causing global climate destruction, and we have only a few years left to cut the world’s climate pollution in half.
Despite publicly claiming to lead, Citi is ignoring science and perpetuating the colonial project of extraction, exploitation, and eradication of people and ecosystems. Since the Paris Climate Agreement was signed in 2016, Citi has stubbornly funded new fossil fuel projects around the world—including new fossil gas export terminals in the U.S. Gulf South, oil and gas drilling in the Amazon rainforest, and oil and fracked gas pipelines through Indigenous lands.
The bank’s board and executives are hoarding wealth at the expense of communities’ health, livelihoods, and safety. But we’re rising up and resisting Citi’s financing of climate destruction, and organizing for community-led solutions to the ecological and economic crises we face. Together, the many can defeat the money.
That’s why Fossil Free Citi is demanding Citi stop funding fossil fuels. Join the movement and demand thriving communities and a safe planet for all.
